Viré-Clessé AOC is a prestigious appellation in Burgundy's Mâconnais subregion, producing exclusively white wine. Here, the 100% Chardonnay grape reveals a beautifully rounded, aromatic, and floral character without heavy oak influence. It is the perfect choice for those who value classic French white wine with an excellent price-to-quality ratio.
Read moreThis appellation was created by uniting two of the finest villages in the Mâconnais zone: Viré and Clessé. The soils here are rich in limestone and clay, and the climate is slightly warmer than in northern Burgundy, yielding wines with a fuller body and ripe fruit expression. When selecting a bottle, keep these characteristics in mind:
Thanks to its rounded body and delicate acidity, this Chardonnay is a highly versatile companion at the dinner table.
Although both are unoaked (or lightly oaked) Chardonnay, Chablis is located much further north. Therefore, Chablis wines feature sharper, more austere acidity and flinty minerality. Viré-Clessé, being further south, produces wines that are rounder, softer, and more redolent of ripe stone fruit and flowers.
Viré-Clessé is generally best enjoyed young (within the first 2 to 4 years after the harvest) to fully appreciate its vibrant freshness and floral aromas. However, wines from top producers can age gracefully in the cellar for 5 to 7 years, developing richer, honeyed complexities over time.
