Alto Adige DOC

1–3 of 3

Alto Adige DOC (also known as Südtirol) is one of Italy’s most distinctive wine appellations, located in the far north of the country at the foothills of the Alps, between the Dolomite Mountains and the Adige River valley. This is a region where wine is shaped not by a Mediterranean influence, but by a mountain climate—here, altitude, temperature contrasts, and a precise sense of place matter more than sheer sunshine.

The appellation is defined by an exceptional altitudinal range: vineyards extend from around 200 to over 1,000 meters above sea level. These conditions allow wines to retain natural acid balance and aromatic clarity even in warmer vintages. Pronounced day–night temperature shifts give the wines freshness, clear structure, and precision.

Alto Adige DOC is renowned for both white and red wines. The whites—particularly from ‘Pinot Grigio’, ‘Gewürztraminer’, ‘Sauvignon Blanc’, and ‘Chardonnay’—are noted for their mineral drive, clean aromatics, and linear structure. The reds—most commonly ‘Lagrein’, ‘Pinot Noir’, and ‘Schiava’—speak through finesse, acid balance, and unforced fruit rather than mass or extraction.

Soils across the region are highly diverse, ranging from limestone and dolomite to porphyry, sandy deposits, and glacial moraines. This geological mosaic allows for precise site expression, making Alto Adige one of Italy’s most terroir-conscious appellations.

Stylistically, Alto Adige DOC wines are valued for their clarity, discipline, and longevity. It is an appellation where wine is not made for effect, but to reflect place—calmly, precisely, and without unnecessary gestures.
