Beaujolais Villages AOP

1–1 of 1

Beaujolais Villages AOP is one of the most expressive and refined appellations in the southern part of Burgundy, located between Mâconnais and Lyon. It encompasses 38 villages known for their hilly, granite-based soils that lend structure, aromatic depth, and elegance to the wines.

This appellation occupies a middle ground between the light, fruit-forward Beaujolais AOP wines and the prestigious “Cru Beaujolais” villages. Beaujolais Villages wines show greater concentration, brighter aromas, and a longer aging potential.

The main grape variety grown here is Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc. This variety reveals its character beautifully on the granite, clay, and sandstone slopes, giving the wines delicate fruit expression with a fresh, subtly spicy tone.

The aroma typically features notes of cherry, raspberry, and wild strawberry, accompanied by hints of violet, pepper, and gentle minerality. On the palate, the wines are light to medium-bodied, smooth yet expressive, with lively acidity and a silky texture.

Beaujolais Villages wines are traditionally produced using the carbonic maceration technique, which helps preserve maximum fruitiness and aromatic intensity. Some winemakers opt for partial fermentation with native yeasts to enhance complexity and structure.

These wines are highly versatile – they pair wonderfully with light appetizers, poultry, roasted pork, or cheeses, and when served slightly chilled (around 13–14 °C), they reveal all their freshness and charm.

Beaujolais Villages AOP is the authentic voice of southern Burgundy: lively, fruity, yet refined – wines that combine accessibility with a true expression of terroir.
