One of Burgundy’s appellations, located to the west of the famous Côte de Nuits slope. The area includes rolling hills and higher-altitude vineyards situated between Nuits-Saint-Georges and Maranges, at around 300–400 meters above sea level.
It is a place where elegant, fresh, and authentic ‘Pinot Noir’ and ‘Chardonnay’ wines are born, reflecting the subtle character of northern Burgundy.
The appellation was officially established in 1961, when Burgundy’s winemakers sought to recognize the potential of their high-altitude vineyards. Because of the elevation and cooler climate, Hautes-Côtes de Nuits wines are known for their lively acidity, lower alcohol levels, and clear expression of terroir – a modern, vibrant interpretation of Burgundy’s classic style.
The soils consist of a mix of calcareous marl and clay, similar to those found on the renowned Côte d’Or slopes, but with more stones and excellent drainage. This geological variety imparts delicate minerality and firm structure to the wines.
Today, Hautes-Côtes de Nuits AOC is considered one of Burgundy’s most exciting appellations, where traditional craftsmanship meets contemporary lightness. It is an ideal choice for those seeking authentic and approachable Burgundy wines that remain true to the region’s essence.
