A benchmark of elegance and finesse in the world of Burgundy’s red wines, Volnay Premier Cru AOC is located in the southern part of the Côte de Beaune, between Pommard and Meursault, on limestone and marl slopes facing east and southeast. Here are born some of the most delicate and refined ‘Pinot Noir’ wines in the entire region.
The winemaking tradition in Volnay dates back to the Middle Ages, with vineyard records already mentioned in the 13th century. The appellation was officially established in 1937, and today it includes 29 Premier Cru vineyards, among them the renowned Clos des Chênes, Champans, Caillerets, Santenots, and Taillepieds.
The climate is continental, with warm summers and cool, sunny autumn evenings. Such conditions allow grapes to ripen evenly, preserving natural acidity and aromatic precision.
The soils consist of clay and limestone marl, rich in stones and providing excellent drainage. This geological composition gives the wines elegance, fine tannins, and a firm mineral backbone. The upper slopes, with a higher limestone content, yield lighter, floral wines, while the lower vineyards produce deeper, more structured expressions with darker fruit nuances.

Volnay wines are made exclusively from ‘Pinot Noir’, a grape that here reaches a rare harmony of delicacy and depth. The aroma reveals red and black fruits — cherries, raspberries, blackberries — accompanied by violet flowers, spices, forest floor, and a touch of minerality.
On the palate, the wines display silky tannins, medium body, and a long, harmonious finish. When young, they are graceful and floral; with age, they evolve into notes of earth, truffle, smoke, and leather. The best examples have an aging potential of 10–20 years.
Many winemakers choose partial oak aging (20–30% new barrels) to maintain fruit purity and a delicate textural balance.
Today, Volnay Premier Cru AOC is regarded as one of the purest expressions of Burgundian elegance — wines that balance feminine grace with masculine structure, where the terroir speaks clearly and precisely through every glass.
