Red dry
One of the most renowned estates of the Southern Rhône, where Louis Barruol crafts wines in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape style, guided by classical traditions and deep respect for ‘Grenache’, ‘Syrah’, ‘Mourvèdre’, and the local terroir.
The wine opens with layers of black cherry, plum, blackberry, and ripe blueberry. These are complemented by a classic Châteauneuf spice profile: Provençal herbs, black pepper, a gentle smoky note, warm stone minerality, and a subtle hint of sweet anise.
On the palate, the wine is dense, multi-layered, and structured, yet it retains the elegance characteristic of Saint Cosme. ‘Grenache’ brings warmth and ripe fruit, ‘Syrah’ adds a spicy backbone, while ‘Mourvèdre’ contributes structure, depth, and ageing potential. The tannins are smooth and silky, well-polished, while the moderate acidity provides tension and vitality. The finish is long and mineral-driven, with notes of dark berries, herbs, and delicate smoke.
The vines grow on galets roulés, limestone, and sandy soils — one of the most influential terroir combinations in Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The heat-retaining stones ensure full ripeness, while the limestone base provides structure, mineral tension, and aromatic clarity. The Mistral winds help maintain grape health and preserve natural acidity.
Fermentation is carried out using native yeasts to preserve the authenticity of the terroir. Ageing takes place in a combination of used French oak barrels and concrete vats, allowing the wine to retain purity of fruit, structural balance, and natural elegance.
Serve at 17-18 °C with roast turkey or duck, slow-cooked beef stews seasoned with mushrooms. Also a great wine pairing with hard, mature cheeses.
Château de Saint Cosme is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in the southern Rhône Valley, located in the Gigondas appellation. The estate’s history dates back to the 16th century, and today it is run by Louis Barruol, representing the 14th generation of the family dedicated to preserving and developing this exceptional domaine.
The winery is renowned for its organic and biodynamic viticulture and for its highly precise work in the cellar. The vineyards grow on limestone, clay, and sandy soils, which give the wines structure, mineral tension, and remarkable ageing potential.
The estate’s flagship grape variety is ‘Grenache’, alongside ‘Syrah’, ‘Mourvèdre’, and ‘Cinsault’. Grapes are harvested by hand, fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, and ageing often takes place in old oak barrels or concrete vats to preserve the purity of the terroir and the authenticity of the wine.
Château de Saint Cosme wines are known for:
expressive yet balanced fruit character
elegant structure
pronounced minerality
excellent ageing potential
The estate is widely regarded as a benchmark of Gigondas, respected both in France and internationally as one of the most authentic expressions of the Southern Rhône.
