Sweet dry
Georg Breuer Elysium Riesling Beerenauslese 2017 - a rare wine from grapes affected by noble rot. Elysium is produced only in selected vintages, and 2017 is part of this small series of exceptional years.
The aromatic profile is characterized by fresh citrus tones, especially the mandarin direction, complemented by a more mineral line. This is important because this wine is not built solely on rich sweetness. Even in the Beerenauslese style, it maintains a clear, transparent aromatic movement and does not seem heavy or sticky. Such a character allows it to remain elegant, not just intense.
In taste, this wine is based on a very precise balance of sweetness and acidity. The official technical sheet indicates 100.1 g/l of residual sugar and 10.3 g/l of acidity, so it is not only rich but also lively in the mouth. That is why Elysium is described as a wine in which sweetness is not static – it is balanced by the natural, bright acidity of Riesling.
In terms of origin, this wine is formed by Rheingau – one of the smallest wine regions in Germany, but famous for its southern slopes and high-class Riesling. The producer calls the 2017 season full of challenges: a short cold winter was followed by an early start to vegetation, a dry summer, and heavy rains in September encouraged the decomposition of berries and the rapid spread of rot. As a result, the harvest began quite early, in early September, and was completed on October 7, after a very strict selection. Such conditions were extremely important for a sweet, concentrated, but acid-retaining wine.
The wine was fermented in small oak barrels, the same ones used by Château d’Yquem, as the producer himself indicates. This gives Elysium additional sophistication and deeper texture.
Serve at 10-12 °C with deserts, fruit platters, lightly ripened cheeses.
The estate, founded in 1880 as part of a wine merchant company, has been owned by the Breuer family since the beginning of the 20th century. Georg Breuer enlarged the estate and increased the export of wines. His sons Bernhard and Heinrich and later Bernhard’s daughter Theresa expanded the vineyard size to 40 hectares in the best Rüdesheim, Rauenthal and Lorch sites. From the early 80’s Bernhard Breuer’s efforts gained an international reputation for the estate. Today it is managed by his daughter Theresa Breuer and production manager of many years, Hermann Schmoranz, with the assistance of cellar master Markus Lundén.
