Sweet sweet
A limited-edition Canadian Icewine from Reif Estate Winery – one of the rarer interpretations of the Cabernet variety in the sweet wine category.
The aroma reveals notes of strawberries, raspberries, cranberries, and subtle nuances of rhubarb. The palate features a concentrated texture where natural sweetness harmonizes with vibrant acidity and a light tannin structure. This gives the wine balance, a clear structure, and a long-lasting fruity finish.
The wine is made from Cabernet Franc or Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, depending on the vintage. They are hand-picked on winter nights when the temperature drops below -8 °C. Under these conditions, the water inside the berries freezes, and pressing extracts only a small amount of highly concentrated, naturally sweet juice.
Serve well-chilled, at a temperature of 6–8 °C. It pairs perfectly with dark chocolate desserts, wild berry tarts, and aged cheeses with a more intense flavor, or it can be enjoyed on its own as a dessert.
Reif Estate Winery is one of the pioneers of Canadian winemaking, located in the Niagara-on-the-Lake region of Ontario. Operating since 1982, this estate is renowned for having some of the oldest Vitis vinifera vineyards in Canada and for its world-acclaimed Icewines. It represents a harmonious blend of deep-rooted German winemaking traditions and the unique terroir of the Niagara River.
Family History and Winemaking Traditions
The Reif family's winemaking roots date back to the 17th century (1636) in the Neustadt region of Germany. The estate's history in Canada began in 1977 when Ewald Reif purchased a plot of land and made the bold decision to uproot the native Vitis labrusca varieties, replacing them with noble Vitis vinifera vines. Officially opened in 1982, Reif Estate Winery became one of the pioneers of quality winemaking in the region. In 1987, the management was taken over by his nephew, Klaus W. Reif, a graduate of the prestigious Geisenheim Institute in Germany. Together with longtime winemaker Roberto DiDomenico, he elevated the estate's quality to an international level.
Niagara River Terroir and Vineyards
The estate owns a 125-acre (approximately 50-hectare) vineyard located in the Niagara River sub-appellation. This is the warmest sub-region of the Ontario peninsula, featuring east-facing slopes that ensure maximum sun exposure. The Niagara River acts as a natural temperature regulator, creating convection currents that protect the vines from early spring or late autumn frosts. This long and stable ripening season allows the grapes to reach perfect maturity, producing balanced, full-bodied wines that perfectly reflect the local soil. These conditions are ideal for crafting both complex white wines and expressive reds.
Global Recognition: Icewine and Premium Red Wines
Reif Estate Winery is most famous for its Icewine, particularly those made from Vidal grapes. Since 1984, these unique, highly sweet, and concentrated dessert wines have won over 100 gold medals at international competitions, including top honors at Vinitaly and the International Wine & Spirit Competition. The grapes for this wine are harvested only when the temperature drops below -8 °C, ensuring exceptionally concentrated natural sweetness and balanced acidity.
In addition to dessert wines, the estate produces the highly acclaimed "First Growth" collection. These are Bordeaux-style red wines (primarily Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir) crafted only in the best vintages. Through strict yield control, careful selection, and long aging in oak barrels, Reif Estate demonstrates that the Niagara Peninsula can yield powerful, elegant, and world-class red wines.
