Description

A true example of classic Rhône craftsmanship, this wine is born on the legendary Hermitage Hill, where granite slopes, old ‘Syrah’ vines, and biodynamic viticulture give it strength, elegance, and a deep sense of place. It is a wine that does not seek to impress, but rather speaks quietly yet expressively — of Hermitage itself and Michel Chapoutier’s precision.

The aroma reveals layers of ripe blackberries, black plums, and blackcurrants, intertwined with violets, black pepper, olives, and a delicate hint of smoke. The bouquet is deep and concentrated, unfolding both the richness of fruit and the subtle earthy, stony, and herbal nuances that define wines from the Hermitage hillside.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and rich, with silky yet firm tannins, vivid acidity, and a long, multi-layered finish. The flavors combine dark fruit intensity with notes of wild herbs and a whisper of smoke, ending in a dry, mineral-driven finale.

The grapes come from several prestigious plots on the Hermitage Hill: Les Bessards (granite soil giving verticality and firmness), Le Méal (clay and limestone adding roundness and depth), and Les Greffieux (sandy soil lending elegance). The combination of these terroirs creates a unique balance of structure, depth, and aromatic purity.

Fermentation is carried out in the traditional way, using natural yeasts and avoiding excessive extraction to preserve the transparency of ‘Syrah’. The wine is aged for around 14 months in large oak foudres, only partly new, maintaining the purity of fruit and the authentic expression of terroir.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C with roast venison and blackcurrant sauce, herb-marinated lamb or mature hard cheese with pepper and nut notes.

About brand

The story began with Michel Chapoutier, a unique man with a thirst for knowledge, definitely one of a kind. Michel is openminded and always willing to learn. He seeks to discover and reflect the full potential of his terroirs and let the soils express their true character. That which gives the wines their signature style. This now forms the basis of the M. Chapoutier ethos and our team strives to reveal the very best of what the soils have to offer.
