Abouriou

1–1 of 1

Abouriou—a rare and incredibly authentic red grape originating from Southwest France (Sud-Ouest). Although this variety was long used merely as a blending grape to add deep, dark color and fruitiness to wines, today it is experiencing a true revival. This red wine is the true embodiment of rustic French charm. In the glass, Abouriou captivates with intense aromas of black cherries, plums, strawberries, and bright black pepper. It is a straightforward wine with firm tannins but milder acidity, ideally suited for hearty meat dishes and perfectly reflecting the spirit of a region where Bordeaux and Gascony traditions intertwine.

The Pride of Southwest France: Côtes du Marmandais

While Abouriou can be found in several parts of Southwest France, its true home and most important place of origin is the Côtes du Marmandais appellation, located just a stone's throw from the famous Bordeaux region.
In these fertile growing sites near the Garonne River, Abouriou thrives. For a long time, local winemakers blended it with classic Bordeaux varieties (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc) or Syrah and Malbec. However, a new generation of natural winemaking enthusiasts is increasingly drawing attention to this resilient variety, producing expressive, 100% varietal Abouriou wines that reveal its untouched, wild character.

Flavor Profile: Dark Berries, Plums, and Black Pepper

  • Aroma: Rich and berry-forward. Dominated by dark fruits—blackberries, black cherries, and dark plums—accompanied by bright strawberry notes. As the wine opens up, a rustic earthiness, along with hints of leather and black pepper, emerges.
  • Structure: The wine features a medium to full body, a deep, opaque red color, and firm, chewy tannins. Since Abouriou naturally has lower acidity, it creates a weighty yet relatively soft, fruity sensation on the palate.

Ideal Food Pairings

Abouriou is a classic rustic-style wine, therefore it demands hearty, rich, and fattier foods.
It is the absolutely perfect companion to classic Southwest French dishes: the legendary meat and bean stew Cassoulet, and slow-roasted duck (Confit de Canard).
This wine also pairs fantastically with grilled sausages, game stews, beef steaks, and hard, aged cheeses. The firm tannins ideally "cut" through the richness of the meat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the name "Abouriou" mean?

The name comes from the local Occitan word "abouriu," which means "early." This grape was named for its unique life cycle: it buds very early in the spring and ripens very early, allowing winemakers to harvest it before the autumn rains begin.

Is this grape grown outside of France?

Yes, although in very small quantities. Historically, Abouriou was brought to California (USA), where for a long time it was mistakenly called "Early Burgundy." Later, DNA testing revealed its true origin. Today, only a few small plots of old vines remain in California, producing exceptionally rare collectible wines.

Is Abouriou wine suitable for aging?

While its firm tannic structure allows this wine to age successfully in the bottle for 3–5 years (sometimes longer), most Abouriou wines are crafted to be drunk relatively young. That is when their fruitiness and aromas of strawberries and pepper are at their most vibrant and best revealed in the glass.
