Chassagne-Montrachet AOC

1–5 of 5

Viticulture in Chassagne-Montrachet dates back to the Middle Ages, when monks from the Cîteaux Abbey planted the first vineyards here. In 1879, the name “Montrachet” was officially added to Chassagne to highlight the village’s shared heritage with one of the most prestigious Grand Cru sites in the world.

Today, the appellation covers more than 300 hectares of vineyards, including three Grand Cru sites (Le Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet) and around 50 Premier Cru climats.

The vineyards of Chassagne-Montrachet lie along gentle hillsides between 220 and 340 meters above sea level. The soils—limestone clay, marl, and stony subsoils—give the wines their distinctive mineral backbone. The continental climate, slightly warmer than that of neighboring Puligny-Montrachet, produces wines that are richer, broader, and rounder on the palate.

Wine Style

White Chassagne-Montrachet wines are concentrated yet refined, offering depth without losing their elegance. The bouquet reveals aromas of lemon zest, white fruit, butter, honey, almonds, and flinty minerality. With age, they develop subtle notes of honey, hazelnut, and toasted oak.

Red Chassagne-Montrachet wines are delicate and expressive, characterized by red cherry, violet, spice, and earthy tones. Though less famous than the whites, they display a graceful ‘Pinot Noir’ profile with fine tannins and silky texture.

Winemaking and Aging

Wines are fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged for 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels, of which 20–30% are new. This careful balance preserves the purity of fruit and allows the terroir to speak clearly through the wine.
