Gevrey-Chambertin AOC

1–10 of 10

One of the most renowned and prestigious villages in Burgundy, Gevrey-Chambertin AOC lies in the northern part of the Côte de Nuits, between the villages of Fixin and Morey-Saint-Denis. It is here that Pinot Noir reaches its deepest, most concentrated, and long-lived expression.

The winemaking tradition of this area dates back to the Middle Ages. The wines of Gevrey-Chambertin were favored by the Dukes of Burgundy and even by Napoleon Bonaparte, who, according to legend, considered it his favorite wine. The appellation was officially established in 1936, and today it covers more than 400 hectares of vineyards, including nine Grand Cru and 26 Premier Cru sites.

The climate is continental, with warm days and cool nights. Vineyards lie between 240–280 meters above sea level, on eastern and southeastern slopes protected from cold winds by the Jura foothills. This environment allows grapes to ripen fully while preserving elegant acidity.

The soils are typically Burgundian – limestone marl mixed with clay, with higher slopes containing more stones and iron oxide, which gives the wines greater depth of color and structure.

Aroma and taste:

Gevrey-Chambertin wines made from Pinot Noir display aromas of dark fruits – blackcurrants, blackberries, and cherries – accompanied by notes of truffle, smoke, forest floor, and subtle spice. On the palate they are full-bodied, with firm yet refined tannins, a clear acid backbone, and a long, mineral finish.

Style diversity:

The Premier Cru wines – such as Clos Saint-Jacques, Cazetiers, and Lavaux-Saint-Jacques – are distinguished by their depth, concentration, and remarkable ageing potential. Meanwhile, village-level Gevrey-Chambertin wines offer a more approachable but still refined style – less tannic, more fruit-forward and elegant.

Ageing:

The wines are typically matured in oak barrels for 12–18 months, with around 20–40% new oak. This imparts delicate hints of vanilla, smoke, and toasted wood while preserving the natural purity of Pinot Noir.

Gevrey-Chambertin represents the perfect harmony between power and finesse. Every glass reflects the depth of the terroir and the precision of its winemakers – a wine that unites structure, nobility, and timeless elegance.
