The pride of northern Italy’s Veneto region and one of the most renowned sparkling wine appellations in the world.
It encompasses the hilly area between the towns of Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, where the ‘Glera’ grape has been cultivated since the 13th century — a variety known for its delicate aromas and refreshing character.
The appellation was granted DOCG status in 2009, when the highest-quality Prosecco wines were distinguished from the broader Prosecco DOC classification.
The term “Superiore” indicates wines from the hillside vineyards, where slopes can reach up to 70%. The soils are fertile, clay-limestone in composition, retaining moisture and contributing to aromatic intensity.
The climate is mild and Mediterranean, yet the altitude of the hills (200–500 meters above sea level) and cool Alpine winds create an ideal balance between ripeness and acidity.
This contrast gives the wines exceptional freshness, purity of aroma, and a soft, elegant texture.
The main grape is ‘Glera’ (at least 85% of the blend), often complemented by ‘Verdiso’, ‘Perera’, or ‘Bianchetta Trevigiana’. Fermentation takes place using the Charmat (Martinotti) method, where the secondary fermentation occurs in sealed pressurized tanks to preserve the natural fruitiness and fine bubbles.
The bouquet is dominated by notes of white fruit – pear, apple, white flowers, acacia honey, and subtle citrus.
On the palate, the wines are fresh, lightly sweet, and finely sparkling, with Extra Dry and Brut styles from Valdobbiadene standing out for their refined balance between liveliness and elegance.
