Chateau de Saint Cosme Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2024

21,00

Description

A classic expression of the Southern Rhône, this wine stands out for its clarity of aroma, refined structure, and the subtle power that defines the finest creations from Saint Cosme. It unites tradition, precision, and a purely articulated terroir character.

On the nose, it opens with notes of black plums, blueberries, black cherries, and gentle blackberry tones. These are joined by signature Syrah markers: floral nuances, black pepper, wild herbs, a touch of smoke, and a delicate earthy tension. As it warms, hints of sweet spices and soft cocoa emerge.

On the palate, the wine is both generous and poised, maintaining a graceful line. The tannins are polished and supple, giving structure without any roughness. The acidity is moderate, supporting balance and liveliness. Dark berry fruit, spice, a faint smoky thread, and a long, mineral finish define its flavour profile. The texture is velvety yet never heavy — a harmony of expressiveness and elegance.

The grapes come from limestone, clay, and stony slopes across selected sites in the Southern Rhône. These soils give depth and character, while Syrah ripens slowly and evenly, preserving aromatic purity and structural precision.

Winemaking follows the classic Saint Cosme philosophy: fermentation with native yeasts, and ageing in both used oak barrels and concrete vats to maintain the purity of Syrah while lending a gentle structural softness.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16-18 °C with roasted game, stewed meat dishes, or hard mature cheeses.

About brand

Château de Saint Cosme is the leading estate of Gigondas and produces the appellation’s benchmark wines. Wine has been produced on the site of Saint Cosme since Roman times, evident by the ancient Gallo-Roman vats carved into the limestone below the château. The property has been in the hands of Louis Barruol’s family since 1490. Henri and Claude Barruol took over in 1957 and gradually moved Saint Cosme away from the bulk wine business. Henri was one of the first in the region to work organically beginning in the 1970s. Louis Barruol took over from his father in 1992, making a dramatic shift to quality, adding a négociant arm to the business in 1997, and converting to biodynamics in 2010. The estate is in the heart of Gigondas where 15 hectares of vineyard grow in the shade of the Dentelles de Montmirail. The limestone that distinguishes Gigondas from other southern Rhône appellations is visible on the jagged cliffs of the Dentelles. In addition to Gigondas and the old-vine selection Gigondas Valbelle, three single-vineyard Gigondas are produced: Hominis Fides, Le Claux, and Le Poste. Louis Barruol owns an additional 10 hectares of vineyard in Violès outside of Gigondas to produce Les Deux Albions Blanc IGP.
