Red dry
López de Heredia Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva Rioja DOCa 2004 - a classic that stops time. This wine is like a journey into the past, to Rioja, where wine is still born from patience, time and silence. López de Heredia is one of the oldest and most respected wineries in Spain, and its "Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva 2004" is living proof that true goodness does not require haste.
In the glass - a delicate ruby color, already changing to amber, reminiscent of the sun's rays sliding through an old wine cellar. The aroma - notes of dark cherries, dried plums, soft leather, tobacco and old wood. After a few minutes - memories of vanilla, smoke and wild herbs unexpectedly light up.
The taste - like a slow walk through an autumn garden: lush, ripe, but still fresh. The tannins are soft, like expensive fabric, and the finish is long, refined, with a gentle echo of spices.
This is a wine that teaches you to listen. It contains time, respect for tradition and the spirit of Rioja, which cannot be faked.
Ageing: about 5 years in oak barrels and a few more in the bottle.
Serve at 16–18°C with meat dishes: beef roast with herbs, wild poultry (duck, pheasant) with sauce. Mature goat or sheep cheeses. Stew dishes with boletus, truffles.
A well-aged wine that shows the richness of Bosconia, with anise, savory plums, berries, mussel shells, cream, iron, white pepper and orange peel. Bright acidity with a full body and fine, sharp, minerally tannins. Long, juicy and savory. Drinkable now, but can keep holding.
The 2004 Viña Bosconia Gran Reserva is very open, expressive and aromatic right away—as soon as it was poured into the glass—while the Tondonia took time to open up. This has a very elegant nose, and despite having less Garnacha than the Tondonia, it has a more Garnacha nose, a little heady with notes of cherries in liqueur and iodine (think Rayas). It has an elegant texture, very fine tannins and pungent flavors, and it's persistent and powerful while keeping balance and freshness. The Bosconia Vineyard is a cooler vineyard that delivers fresher wines; the grapes were picked quite late, from the 20th of October, later than the ones from the Tondonia vineyard. Only 6,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in March 2019. Some of these vintages have had a much longer élevage, though not necessarily all in barrel, as the wines also spent time in the ancient oak vats.
López de Heredia – one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Spain, founded in 1880 by Don Rafael López de Heredia. For more than 140 years, this family estate has become a true symbol of Rioja, renowned for its unwavering commitment to traditional winemaking. Unlike many others, the estate has always worked exclusively with its own vineyards, ensuring full quality control and authentic terroir expression.
Wine Style
López de Heredia wines are celebrated for their depth, complexity, and remarkable longevity.
These wines stand as proof that a truly traditional style can remain timeless and relevant today.
Authentic Winemaking Methods
The estate follows methods established in the 19th century. Fermentation takes place in 72 large oak vats, some of which have been in use since the winery’s founding. Wines are then aged for extended periods in handmade American oak barrels, providing finesse, depth, and distinctive structure. All barrels are crafted in the winery’s own cooperage, preserving independence and authenticity.
Prestigious Vineyards
López de Heredia owns 170 hectares of vineyards in Rioja Alta. Among them, the renowned Viña Tondonia (founded in 1913) is considered one of the most iconic sites in all of Rioja. Other notable vineyards include Viña Bosconia, Viña Cubillo, and Viña Gravonia, each contributing unique character and enhancing the winery’s reputation for excellence.
Aging and Drinking Window
One of the hallmarks of López de Heredia is its extraordinary aging process. Wines are kept in oak barrels far longer than usual – often 6 to 10 years – and once bottled, they may continue to mature in the cellars for several more decades. While approachable in their youth, these wines reveal their true greatness with age – a timeless expression of Rioja that never goes out of style.
