Description

The grapes for Niepoort Poeirinho Bairrada DOC 2015 are sourced exclusively from century-old vines at Quinta de Baixo, tended according to SATIVA organic farming standards. In the past, Poeirinho was the name given to the Baga grape; this nod to the past was no accident — it represents a deliberate attempt to craft a wine in the style of the previous century: light, modest in alcohol, and demanding bottle ageing.

Part of the wine was fermented for 4 weeks in large Lagares; the other part underwent carbonic maceration in closed tanks. Malolactic fermentation took place in used oak barrels, where the wine then aged for 20 months. The wine was bottled unfiltered.

A pale cherry-red, translucent wine. Expressive on the nose, with intertwining aromas of freshly crushed red and black berries, complemented by notes of earthiness, minerality, and spices such as cinnamon. On the palate, the wine is exceptionally light, driven by vibrant acidity, a silky texture, and abundant tannins.

Vine age: from 100 years.

9,000 bottles produced.

Serving recommendations

Serve lightly chilled at 15 °C in red Burgundy wine glasses, with braised goat, sausages, oven-baked cod or vegetarian legume dishes. We recommend decanting.

Aromas of sour cherries and a hint of white pepper follow through to a medium body, light tannins and a very fresh finish with intense acidity and bright fruit. Drink now.

I did a mini-vertical of the Poeirinho Garrafeira, the 2015 and 2012 vintages, to check the evolution. The 2015 Poeirinho Garrafeira is a selection of the two best vats from the 2015 vintage aged for four years in oak vats. In 2015, they did the vinification in stainless steel, and it was a drier year. This has a lighter and brighter ruby color, and the wine has a lot more finesse and elegance. It's fresher and has lower alcohol, 11.5% alcohol. It has less extraction, with more lightness and less tannin, but it continues developing nicely and doesn't show any age at all. 5,360 bottles produced. It was bottled in 2019.

About brand

Niepoort – A Fusion of Portuguese Wine Tradition and Innovation

Niepoort is one of Portugal’s most iconic and highly respected wine producers, crafting outstanding Port wines as well as still wines from the Douro, Dão and Bairrada regions since 1842. A family-owned winery, Niepoort is defined by vision, respect for tradition, courage, curiosity and a restless drive to explore. These qualities have shaped the Niepoort family journey for generations.

The results are born of meticulous work, but also of a constant desire for innovation, rooted in collaboration and generational dialogue. Throughout Niepoort’s history, two generations have always worked side by side. Today, the fifth and sixth generations continue this tradition, earning international acclaim for their ability to unite deep-rooted winemaking heritage with a modern, creative approach to wine.

Douro Valley – A Unique Terroir and a Home of Sustainable Winemaking

Niepoort wines originate in one of Europe’s oldest and most dramatic wine regions – the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here, schist (xisto) soils, steep mountainous landscapes and the river-shaped microclimate create ideal conditions for producing wines of character, depth and complexity.

Niepoort places strong emphasis on sustainable viticulture. Many vineyards are farmed according to organic or biodynamic principles, and winemaking is carried out with minimal intervention. Old vines, careful hand harvesting and natural fermentations allow each vintage to express its true and authentic character.

Masters of Port – And Much More

While Niepoort is globally renowned for producing some of the world’s finest Port wines, the estate is equally celebrated for its dry red and white wines, admired for their freshness, elegance and remarkable ageing potential. Iconic labels such as Redoma, Batuta, Vertente and Coche showcase the Douro’s ability to produce world-class wines beyond fortified styles.

Every bottle is a reflection of a deep connection to the land, respect for history and an unrelenting passion for experimentation.

A Philosophy Driven by Curiosity and Craft

For Niepoort, winemaking is not just about theory or technology, but about doing what you love, without fear of making mistakes. Experimenting, refining and reinventing until balance is achieved – always with respect for terroir and the wisdom of previous generations.

“It’s not machines that make the difference, but our minds.”

This is how Dirk Niepoort continues to champion Portuguese wines on the international stage: by caring for old vineyards and exploring the full potential of indigenous grape varieties. Step into the world of Niepoort – where tradition and innovation walk hand in hand.
