Description

"Sperss" is characterized by a strict "Nebbiolo" character, typical of Serralunga: strong, masculine structure, and plenty of ripe tannins.

The palate clearly expresses nuances of plums, cherries, licorice, leather, and tobacco. A beautifully balanced, long-lasting aftertaste reveals hints of wild herbs and spices.

In 1988, the Gaja family expanded their holdings, acquiring 12 hectares of vineyards in one of the most suitable areas of Serralunga, which they named "Sperss". The amphitheater-shaped 30-hectare plot consists of very compact clay and limestone marl layers, facing south and southwest, with an average altitude of 1210 feet above sea level. The "Nebbiolo" vines growing here are approximately 50 years old.

The grape juice fermentation and maceration process lasted 3 weeks in stainless steel tanks. The wine was then aged for 12 months in small and 18 months in large oak barrels.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16-18 °C with rich game dishes with wild mushrooms, beef sirloin steak or bright, long-ripened hard cheeses flavoured with truffles.

Wine Advocate

With fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the Gaja 2018 Barolo Sperss is impossible to confuse with any other Barolo. The bouquet has a firm, etched quality with dark fruit, pencil shavings, iron and red brick. But there is also a fragrant interlude of wild cherry, forest fruit and orange peel. The Barolo Conteisa shows more overall ripeness and silkiness in this vintage, but the Sperss is all about muscle, power and structure. It promises a longer aging potential and bottle evolution.

Very spiced with deep, dark earth and forest aromas of black truffles, bark, mushrooms, licorice and iodine. Full-bodied and very reserved, with a linear and racy palate that goes on for minutes. Gunpowder highlights to the dark fruit and forest floor character. Structured. Try after 2028.

About brand

The Gaja family settled in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy in the mid-17th century. They have been producing wine in the Barbaresco area since 1859. Four generations of dedicated work and a noble pursuit of making top-quality wines have made the Gaja name synonymous with Italian winemaking excellence worldwide. Today, the fifth generation – Gaia, Giovanni, and Rossana Gaja – continues the family traditions, leading this legendary winery.

Currently, Gaja in Piedmont produces both classic expressions of the ‘Nebbiolo’ grape – Barbarescos and Barolos – and innovative “Langhe DOC” red and white wines from international grape varieties. The family also owns two estates in Tuscany: “Ca’Marcanda” in Bolgheri, famous for its “Super Tuscan” wines, and “Pieve S. Restituta” in the Montalcino area, producing “Brunello di Montalcino” wines. Additionally, a joint project with Alberto Graci in Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna, testifies to the family’s constant pursuit of innovation and quality.

The Gaja family firmly believes that the true spirit and quality of wine are born in the vineyards themselves. Therefore, the greatest attention is paid to vineyard care: searching for climate change-resistant clones, limiting yields, growing other crops between vineyard rows to enrich the soil and help retain moisture and protect the harvest from heat. The highest quality standards are applied to all farms: grapes are grown only in family-owned vineyards, adhering to ecological and sustainability principles, with particular attention to soil quality and biodiversity.

Wine Style

Gaja wines are characterized by elegance, complexity, and perfectly reflect the terroir of their origin regions.

  • White wines: bright, mineral, full-bodied, with pure aromas and a subtle touch of oak.
  • Red wines: aromatic, with smooth tannins, juicy, with dominant red berry notes.

  • “Ca’Marcanda” (Bolgheri): famous for its “Super Tuscan” wines.
  • “Pieve S. Restituta” (Montalcino): producing top-quality “Brunello di Montalcino” wines.
  • Etna (Sicily): a joint project with Alberto Graci, revealing the uniqueness of the Etna terroir.

Aging and Consumption Period
