Description

An exceptional wine produced only in the finest vintages, created in honor of Marcel Lapierre – the visionary who redefined the identity of Beaujolais Morgon and became an icon of natural winemaking. This cuvée is a synthesis of depth, elegance, and authenticity, reflecting both the power of the Côte du Py terroir and the mastery of the Lapierre family.

The wine is born from the estate’s oldest ‘Gamay’ vines, over 70 years old, deeply rooted in the renowned Côte du Py hillside, where granite and schist soils impart structure, minerality, and remarkable concentration. The vines’ deep roots yield naturally small but intensely flavored harvests, resulting in exceptional balance and complexity.

In the glass, Cuvée Marcel displays a vivid ruby color and aromas of wild cherries, raspberries, black plums, and rose petals, delicately interwoven with spices, sweet herbs, pepper, and a distinct granite-driven minerality. The bouquet is deep, elegant, and composed, full of energy and vitality.

On the palate, it is full-bodied yet refined, built on a juicy red fruit core complemented by silky yet firm tannins and vibrant acidity. Layers of chocolate, spice, wild herbs, and mineral tones unfold gracefully, leading to a long, pure, and elegantly saline finish. This is a wine that evolves beautifully in the glass, moving from bright fruit to profound depth.

Fermentation takes place with whole clusters using the traditional carbonic maceration method, followed by around one year of aging in old Burgundy oak barrels. It is bottled unfiltered and unfined, preserving the wine’s natural energy and true expression of terroir.

M.C. Lapierre Morgon Cuvée Marcel MMXIX 2024 represents the grandeur of pure ‘Gamay’, uniting Beaujolais freedom with Burgundian precision. A wine not only to taste, but to contemplate – one of the most authentic voices of Morgon today.

Serving recommendations

About brand

Marcel Lapierre is one of the key names not only in the Morgon appellation but in the entire Beaujolais region. After taking over the winery from his father, Marcel soon began following the teachings of the famous winemaker and chemist Jules Chauvet, who, as early as the mid-20th century, promoted natural winemaking, avoiding pesticides and herbicides, and encouraged working with healthy grapes and minimal intervention in the cellar.

Marcel’s philosophy quickly attracted like-minded colleagues – together with three other similarly minded winemakers, he became a member of the famous (though unofficial) club “The Gang of Four”. This movement revived the reputation of Beaujolais, which had long been associated with cheap, hastily made Beaujolais Nouveau, and restored its place among France’s high-quality wines.

After Marcel’s sudden passing in 2010, the winery was taken over by his children, Camille and Mathieu, who continue to uphold their father’s vision. The estate works according to biodynamic and organic principles, and in the cellar, a philosophy of minimal intervention is strictly followed – fermentation occurs naturally, without added yeasts, and sulfite use is kept to an absolute minimum.

Wine Style

Marcel Lapierre wines are renowned for their purity, natural expression, and the distinctive character of the ‘Gamay’ grape. These are warm, fruit-driven, yet refined wines that perfectly reflect the Morgon terroir.

  • Red wine – made exclusively from ‘Gamay’. In their youth, they show rich aromas of red and black berries, floral notes, and subtle hints of herbs. With age, they gain complexity, revealing spice, dried fruit, and a gentle earthy character. The tannins are soft, the structure is balanced, and the finish is long and elegant.

Prestigious Vineyards

The estate works with old ‘Gamay’ vines in the Morgon appellation, some over 60 years old.

  • Côte du Py – an iconic Morgon vineyard, famous for its volcanic soils that lend minerality and structure to the wines.
  • Other Morgon parcels – contribute fruitiness, warmth, and elegance, creating the unique balance of Marcel Lapierre wines.

Aging and Drinking Window

The wines ferment naturally using carbonic maceration and indigenous yeasts. They are aged in large, used oak casks to preserve the fresh fruit character.

Marcel Lapierre wines are delightful to drink young for their vibrant fruit, but they also have the potential to age gracefully for 5–10 years, gaining complexity and refined nuances over time.
