Muscat is one of the oldest and most widely cultivated grape families in the world, renowned for its intensely aromatic profile. Unlike many other grape varieties, Muscat wines often display aromas that closely resemble fresh grapes themselves – a characteristic commonly described as “grapey” or primary aromatic expression.
The Muscat grape is remarkably versatile and used to produce a wide range of wine styles. These include dry, off-dry, sweet and dessert wines, as well as sparkling and natural wines. Typical flavour profiles feature floral notes, orange blossom, musk, peach, citrus fruits and honey, depending on the style and region.
The defining feature of Muscat wines is their natural aromatic intensity, which comes from the grape itself rather than from winemaking techniques. As a result, Muscat wines tend to be highly expressive even at lower alcohol levels, with a clear and immediately recognizable character.
Muscat wines pair particularly well with fruit-based desserts, light pastries, cheeses – especially blue or aged varieties – as well as Asian cuisine featuring sweet-and-sour or gently spicy flavours. Drier Muscat styles are often served as an aperitif.
Muscat wine is best served well chilled, at approximately 6–10 °C, depending on the style. Proper serving temperature helps preserve aromatic freshness and balance, especially in sweeter or highly aromatic expressions.
