Red dry
Castello di Volpaia Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2020 is 100% ‘Sangiovese’ from the heights of Radda in Chianti (Chianti Classico), created from several vineyards in Volpaia and made from organically grown grapes. The 2020 vintage is described as more elegant than highly concentrated.
On the nose, the wine opens in the direction of ripe cherries and dried strawberries, with hints of dried orange peel, spices and crushed rock (stoniness).
On the palate, a medium to slightly full-bodied wine with a compact, firm, fine-grained tannin structure. The tannins are more “ordered” than sharp, the texture is smooth. 0.5 g/l residual sugar, 5.6 g/l acidity.
The vineyards are located on slopes at an altitude of about 1,300-1,970 feet (approximately 400-600 m), with southern, southeastern and southwestern exposure. The soils are mainly lighter, sandstone-type, except for the clayier plots of Castellino and Santa Maria Novella. This combination often results in more precise acidity, tighter contours and better longevity.
The wine is aged for 24 months in oak barrels (a combination of Slovenian and French oak), followed by at least 3 more months in bottle.
Serve at a temperature of 16-18 °C with grilled meat, game stews with mushrooms or vegetables.
Attractive aromas of ripe cherries, dried strawberries, dried orange peel, spices and crushed stones, following through to a medium to full body with compact tannins that are firm and finely grained. Smooth and textured with vivid fruit underneath and a lingering finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
"Castello di Volpaia" is more than just vineyards and a farm – it's the historic residence of the Della Volpaia family of Florence, a dynasty of artists and builders who once created armillary spheres and sundials. Lorenzo, a friend of Leonardo da Vinci, who created an impressive clock for Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, was a particularly prominent member.
Today, "Castello di Volpaia" belongs to the Mascheroni Stianti family, who are dedicated to ensuring that every restoration respects the original artistic heritage. Maintaining the traditions of the 11th century, the castle and the surrounding village remain closely linked to the production of high-quality wine and olive oil. The unique terroir of the Volpaia area, located in the prestigious Chianti Classico region, gives the wines their distinctive character. The winery owns 360 hectares of vineyards, which are farmed according to strict organic farming principles, emphasizing the harmony between nature and man. "Castello di Volpaia" is undoubtedly considered a super classic Italian wine producer, and almost all of their red wines are made from Tuscany's primary grape variety, ‘Sangiovese’.
