Description

This Bordeaux wine brings together the power of ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, the softness of ‘Merlot’, and the aromatic tension of ‘Cabernet Franc’, creating a subtle and long-lived expression of balance and harmony.

On the nose, it reveals notes of blackcurrant, cherry, and plum, complemented by hints of tobacco leaf, cedarwood, graphite, and a touch of earthy minerality. The bouquet is classic Margaux – elegant, refined, and complex, with a delicate oak influence that preserves the purity of the fruit.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied yet remarkably graceful. The tannins are silky but firm, providing structure, while the lively acidity maintains perfect balance. Layers of dark berries, cocoa, cedar, and herbal nuances unfold toward a long, finely spiced finish, with subtle notes of earth and blackberry.

The gravelly and clay-limestone soils at the heart of the Margaux appellation endow the wine with both elegance and freshness. Grapes are hand-harvested and carefully sorted, and fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks to preserve aromatic precision and purity.

Aging lasts around 18 months in French oak barrels, about 60% of which are new, achieving a perfect harmony between oak integration and the natural fruit character of Margaux.

Serving recommendations

Serving suggestion: Serve at 16–18 °C with roast duck and rosemary, veal medallions with black truffle sauce, or mature Tomme de Savoie cheese, whose delicate nuttiness pairs perfectly with the elegance of Margaux.

Wine Advocate

The 2014 Brane-Cantenac has a very classy bouquet, very well defined with blackberry, cedar and tobacco scents, that trademark graphite scent emerging with a few swirls of the glass. It is exactly what you expect from this Margaux estate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-judged acidity, graphite and cedar towards the linear finish that will clearly need several years to unfold. Classic Margaux really, but wise owls will cellar it away for several years.

This is a complete wine, full of both tannins and great swathes of ripe fruit. It has a serious side as well in its solid structure and concentration. The juicy blackberry fruits are beginning to calm down and meld into a fine dense wine that will age very well.

About brand

Château Brane-Cantenac is a Bordeaux wine estate located in the Margaux appellation. It is best known for its subtle, elegant red wines that clearly express the character of the local terroir. The estate has deep-rooted traditions and holds a strong position among the Deuxième Grand Cru Classé vineyards of the 1855 Bordeaux Classification, symbolizing the refinement and elegance of the Margaux region.

The history of Brane-Cantenac dates back to the 18th century, when Jean-François de Brane, a prominent Bordeaux aristocrat and wine enthusiast, decided to develop the estate on the limestone slopes of Margaux. From the very beginning, the estate emphasized the pure expression of terroir, revealing the structure of the soils, the microclimate, and the grape harvest in a distinctive and elegant style.

The estate manages around 90 hectares of vineyards, planted mainly on fine gravel soils, which in the Margaux appellation are considered particularly well suited for growing ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, ‘Merlot’, ‘Cabernet Franc’, and ‘Petit Verdot’ grape varieties. Concentration, structure, and minerality form the foundation of this producer’s winemaking style.

Sustainable and responsible vineyard management practices prevail, with a strong focus on soil care, vine health, and the natural ripening of the fruit. The harvest is carried out by hand at optimal maturity, and the grapes are meticulously sorted to ensure the expressive character and aromatic purity of the wines.

Winemaking at Château Brane-Cantenac is a precise combination of traditional Bordeaux fermentation methods and modern technological control, allowing the preservation of fruit intensity and structural balance. After fermentation, the wines are aged for an extended period in French oak barrels, a proportion of which are new. This adds complexity, softer tannins, and significant ageing potential to the wines.

The defining stylistic traits of Brane-Cantenac wines are elegance, finesse, and precision, combined with clear fruit expression and subtle floral and spice notes. These are wines capable of ageing gracefully for decades, fully revealing the voice of the Margaux terroir.

Today, Château Brane-Cantenac is regarded as one of the ambassadors of Margaux classicism, symbolizing the continuity of Bordeaux winemaking traditions and the influence of terroir on the distinctive wines of this renowned region.
