De Martino Legado Carmenere Maipo Valley 2023

22,00

Description

Legado Carménère 2023 marks a return to the roots of the Maipo Valley and the ‘Carménère’ grape variety, which found its second home in Chile. With this wine, Viña De Martino seeks a classic expression of Carménère—defined by structure and subtle spiciness.

The aroma is deep yet precise: ripe black plums, blackberries, and blackcurrants intertwine with notes of dried herbs, green pepper, tobacco leaf, and a light graphite nuance.

On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with balanced, vibrant acidity and fine, well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and dry, marked by a subtle bitterness and herbal accent characteristic of the variety.

The vineyards are located in the Maipo Valley, on alluvial, stony soils, influenced by the Andes Mountains—conditions that allow ‘Carménère’ to retain acid balance and aromatic precision, avoiding excessive ripeness.

Fermentation is carried out with native yeasts, followed by ageing in French oak barrels, using a restrained proportion of new oak.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C. Pairs well with roast lamb, beef dishes, and spicy vegetable stews.

About brand

De Martino Winery is a family-owned estate founded in 1934 by Pietro De Martino, an Italian immigrant who established ideal conditions for wine production in the Maipo Valley. The winery consistently invests in organic viticulture and sustainable farming, aiming to reveal the diversity of Chile's regions and the authentic expression of terroir. Their winemakers constantly travel through different Chilean locations, seeking unique plots for the production of individual, exceptional wines, striving to prove that Chile can produce top-quality wines. De Martino was the first to export Carmenere wine to foreign countries in 1996, and currently, their single-vineyard wines consistently receive high ratings from wine critics, enthusiasts, and professionals alike.

Wine Style

De Martino wines are characterized by fresh acidity, fruitiness, and earthy notes, along with a distinctive minerality – qualities that are somewhat less common in New World wines.

  • Carmenere: Intense, with subtle notes of spices, smoke, and earth, which harmoniously blend with soft tannins.
  • Chardonnay and Syrah: Elegant variations where the influence of traditional oak barrels adds extra complexity to the wines.

Prestigious Vineyards

The grapes used for De Martino wines are grown in unique Chilean regions:

  • Isla de Maipo: A region with a Mediterranean climate and distinctive soil that imparts a special character to the wines.
  • Itata: Traditional vineyards where classic methods are employed to reveal the authenticity of the terroir.

Aging and Consumption Period

The wines are aged using both modern and traditional technologies, allowing them to maintain their authenticity and emphasize the local terroir. While most De Martino wines are enjoyable upon release, some variations have the potential for long aging, developing even more complex notes.
