Description

Masciarelli Villa Gemma Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Riserva DOC 2012 is a single-vineyard, 100% ‘Montepulciano’ wine from Abruzzo, belonging to one of Masciarelli’s most important labels. The producer himself describes this wine as extremely intense, characteristic and complex, and presents the “Villa Gemma” line as a wine that helped show the world what Abruzzo reds can be.

In aroma, this wine reveals itself in a rich and mature way: notes of ripe red fruits, dried fruits, spices, cocoa, black pepper and liquorice. This is an aromatic that is based not only on fruitiness, but also on the depth provided by maturity, spices and wood.

In taste, the wine is full-bodied, concentrated and has a solid structure. The 2012 vintage emphasizes its strength and complexity. This is a serious Abruzzo red intended for longer aging, in which strength is combined with an elegantly maintained backbone.

The character of this wine is shaped by the Colle Cave vineyard in the province of Chieti, linked to the history of the Masciarelli family. It is a steep slope, dominated by a combination of limestone, clay and gravel, and the general technical information of Villa Gemma also mentions the S. Martino sulla Marrucina site, at around 400 m above sea level, with a south-east exposure, Guyot training and a very dense planting of around 9,000 vines per hectare. This terroir and planting density help to obtain both concentration and structure.

The winemaking model for this 2012 wine was based on a long development model. The must was macerated and fermented in 3,000-5,000 l botti tanks, after which the wine was transferred to new French oak barrels. Aging lasted for 18-24 months in oak, followed by a further 24-36 months in bottle before release. It is this scheme that helps explain its rich texture, tannin maturity, and longer, deeper flavor development.

Wine Enthusiast

A heady dose of fresh dill and cigar box rides over a dense core of cherry and spicy blackberry in this flagship wine from Masciarelli. It's big and bold on the palate, boasting a concentrated berry tone bolstered by bracing tannins and shot through with a refreshing granite twang. This powerful wine needs time in the cellar. Drink 2022–2030.

Aromatic smoke and graphite notes underscore the pure flavors of black currant and cherry fruit, dried herb and mandarin orange peel in this expressive, elegant red. Structured by fine-grained tannins, this is lightly mouthwatering throughout, with a lasting finish of licorice and spice. Drink now through 2027. 60 cases imported.

About brand

Gianni Masciarelli Winery – The Elite of Abruzzo Wines

Since 1978, when Gianni Masciarelli took over the family winery in the commune of San Martino sulla Marrucina, it has become one of the leading names in Italian winemaking. The estate’s wines, known for their exceptional quality, have become true symbols of Italian wine culture.

Innovative Winemaking in Abruzzo

Gianni Masciarelli was among the first to introduce modern winemaking techniques to the traditionally underdeveloped Abruzzo region. His work combined respect for local traditions with innovation, cultivating both indigenous and international grape varieties such as Montepulciano, Chardonnay, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Leaders of Abruzzo Wine: “Villa Gemma”, “Castello di Semivicoli” and “Marina Cvetic”

“Villa Gemma”, “Castello di Semivicoli”, and “Marina Cvetic” are three flagship wine collections produced by the Masciarelli estate. These wines have received international recognition and consistently rank highly among wine critics and enthusiasts. The iconic “Villa Gemma”, made from Montepulciano grapes, has become one of the most acclaimed and sought-after Italian wines both domestically and internationally.

Marina Cvetic and the Future of Masciarelli Wines

Following the sudden passing of Gianni Masciarelli in 2008, the winery was taken over by his wife, winemaker Marina Cvetic. She continues her husband’s legacy, maintaining the highest standards of quality and craftsmanship. Thanks to her dedication and vision, Masciarelli remains one of Italy’s most respected wineries, producing wines that seamlessly combine tradition with modern winemaking excellence.

If you are looking for authentic wines that unite heritage and innovation, Masciarelli wines are an outstanding choice for any wine collection.
