Red dry
A classic example of the traditional Rioja school, where the historic winemaking expertise of La Rioja Alta, the pure expression of Tempranillo, and a refined, timeless elegance come together. This is a wine that convinces through balance, texture, and maturity, rather than power.
The aroma is immediately recognisable as a true Rioja Reserva: ripe cherries, red currants, and plums, accompanied by notes of vanilla, coconut, toasted oak, cedar, and sweet spices. With time in the glass, nuances of tobacco leaf, dried herbs, subtle leather, and a light balsamic touch begin to emerge.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, smooth, and harmonious. The tannins are fine and polished, while the acidity is lively and beautifully integrated, providing freshness and structural precision. Flavours are led by red berry fruit, supported by gentle vanilla, spice, and a soft oak warmth. The finish is clean, medium-long, and elegant, marked by the silky texture that defines classic Rioja.
The grapes are grown in the Rioja Alta zone, on limestone and clay soils that give Tempranillo its natural acidity, clarity, and ability to age gracefully.
The harvest is carried out by hand. Fermentation takes place under strict temperature control, followed by around two years of ageing in American oak barrels, characteristic of the La Rioja Alta style, and further bottle ageing. The result is a classic, reliable, and highly versatile Rioja Reserva, equally suited to everyday dining or more contemplative enjoyment.
Served at 16-18 °C, it pairs well with beef, lamb or game dishes, stews and mature hard cheeses.
Bodegas La Rioja Alta is undoubtedly a representative of old Rioja, exceptionally valuing and cultivating the region's traditional winemaking methods. Their “Gran Reserva” wine is aged for no less than six years in barrel and a further two years in bottle before reaching the consumer, embodying patience and mastery. The high-altitude vineyards of La Rioja Alta, with their unique conditions, lend a subtlety to the wines, sometimes even reminiscent of Burgundy’s ‘Pinot Noir’. While the La Rioja Alta group also includes wineries in Galicia (Rias Baixas) and Ribera del Duero (Burgos), it is their traditional Rioja style that remains their hallmark.
