Red dry
Holding 2ème Grand Cru Classé status, Château Cos d’Estournel is one of the most distinctive names in Saint-Estèphe, renowned for its exotic, powerful yet remarkably precise expression.
The aroma is deep and multi-layered: blackcurrants, blackberries, plums and dark cherries intertwine with notes of cedar, tobacco leaf, graphite and a subtle smoky tone. With aeration, the wine reveals oriental spices, black pepper, cocoa, nutmeg, balsamic herbs and a delicate incense-like nuance — a signature unmistakably associated with Cos d’Estournel.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and concentrated, yet strikingly clean and perfectly balanced. The tannins are dense, ripe and silky, creating a structure that is both powerful and elegant. Acidity is lively and precise, sustaining the wine’s intensity and ensuring exceptional longevity. Flavours unfold in layers of ripe dark fruit, graphite, cedar and refined spice, supported by a subtle mineral tension. The finish is long, dry and profound, with lingering notes of tobacco, spice and a gentle saline edge.
The identity of Château Cos d’Estournel is shaped by its Saint-Estèphe terroir — gravel and clay soils over a limestone base, which provide strength, structure and distinctive mineral depth. Here, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot achieve an impressive balance between concentration and elegance, particularly in warm, fully ripe vintages such as 2022.
The harvest is carried out by hand, with meticulous berry selection. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled vats, followed by 18–20 months of ageing in French oak barrels, a significant proportion of which are new, enhancing the wine’s structure without overshadowing its terroir-driven character.
Patiekti 18 - 20 °C temperatūros prie griliuje keptų jautienos ar ėrienos kepsnių. Rekomenduojama dekantuoti pora valandų prieš patiekiant vyną.
Wow. So intense and spicy with nutmeg, cloves, ink and blackberries. Also asphalt, lead pencil and tobacco. Full-bodied, but at the same time, there’s a real balance giving incredible depth and length. The tannins are all there but are polished as well as firm. Superb structure. A neoclassical Cos, one for long-term aging. Perhaps the best ever. A blend of 61% cabernet sauvignon, 37% merlot, 1% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.
The vineyard of Château Cos d’Estournel now covers 91 hectares. On this terroir with meager peaks and on the southern slopes, Cabernet Sauvignon (60% of the vineyard) find their soils of choice. On the eastern slopes and on the coasts where the limestone basement of Saint-Estèphe is exposed, the Merlots (40% of the vineyard). Only wines from vineyards over twenty years old will bear the name of Château Cos d’Estournel. Density from 8 to 10,000 feet per hectare. Each winemaker has the personal responsibility of 45,000 vines, which he takes care of every year. These farming methods are essentially manual. The harvest is of course also manual and it is handmade that the grapes, collected in special crates, will be carefully sorted. At Château Cos d’Estournel, vinification adapts to the character of the harvest, to favor the expression of the terroir and this thanks to a new cellar. Precise grape sorting and pure gravity pumping using 4 lift vats as well as precise control of fermentation temperatures favor the selection of the softest tannins and the preservation of the fruit. The aging in new oak barrels merrain discretely enhances aromas and flavors with a fair woody. Château Cos d’Estournel will then spend 18 months in barrels.
