Château Gazin is one of the most renowned and highly regarded Bordeaux wine estates in the prestigious Pomerol appellation, located on the right bank of the Gironde River. This historic estate is celebrated for its elegant, concentrated, and long-lived wines, whose style is built around the ‘Merlot’ grape variety and the unique character of the Pomerol terroir.
The vineyards cover approximately 26 hectares and are situated on one of the highest plateaus in Pomerol. The soils consist of Gunizan gravel layers with an iron oxide-rich subsoil, a structure that gives the wines depth, minerality, and remarkable ageing potential. The average vine age is around 35 years, with more than 85% planted to ‘Merlot’. A small proportion is dedicated to ‘Cabernet Franc’ and ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’, which are used in the blends to provide additional structure and aromatic complexity.
Château Gazin Grand Vin is the estate’s flagship wine, typically produced from 85–95% ‘Merlot’, depending on the characteristics of each vintage. The remainder is composed of ‘Cabernet Franc’ and ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’. The wine is aged for approximately 18 months, with about half of this time spent in new French oak barrels. This ageing process contributes to a refined tannic texture and complex aromatic profile. These wines generally reach their prime after 10–15 years of cellaring.
The estate’s second wine, L’Hospitalet de Gazin, was first produced in 1986. It represents a more approachable and elegant style while still maintaining the true spirit of Pomerol.
Fermentation takes place in small concrete vats, allowing for the separate vinification of different grape varieties and vineyard parcels. Only after fermentation are the individual components carefully tasted and blended to create a final wine of maximum harmony and balance.
The history of the estate dates back to the early 20th century, when Château Gazin was acquired by French wine merchant Louis Soualle. His daughter later married Edouard de Bailliencourt, a member of an old aristocratic family. Today, Château Gazin remains owned and managed by the same Bailliencourt family, who continue to uphold long-standing traditions while embracing a modern winemaking vision.
Château Gazin wines are valued for their rich fruit expression, silky tannin structure, elegance, and exceptional ability to age. They are classic examples of the Pomerol style—expressive, refined, and deeply marked by a sense of place that reflects one of the most prestigious regions of Bordeaux.
