Description

Château Gazin 2016 is one of the highest-rated Pomerol wines from an exceptional vintage, earning 94–95 points from Robert Parker and James Suckling. This wine is an excellent choice for collectors and lovers of refined Bordeaux style, offering deep structure, long-term aging potential, and elegance.

The aroma reveals layers of black and red fruits, accented by violet flowers, vanilla, mocha, and delicate spice notes. On the palate, it is rounded, silky, and harmonious, with a long-lasting, rich finish. This is a wine whose elegance will unfold both now and over the coming decades.

The wine is produced at Château Gazin, owned by the De Bailliencourt dit Courcol family since 1917, and regarded as one of the key names in Pomerol. The 26-hectare vineyard lies on a high clay and gravel terrace, adjacent to prestigious neighbors such as Pétrus.

The blend is composed of 'Merlot' 87%, 'Cabernet Sauvignon' 8%, and 'Cabernet Franc' 5%. Aged for 15 months in French oak barrels, 45% of which were new, the wine preserves its fruit expression, structure, and a subtle touch of maturity.

Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2016 Gazin features a beautifully perfumed nose of violets, Ceylon tea, cigar box, sandalwood and fallen leaves over a core of plum preserves, kirsch and blackberry preserves plus a waft of aniseed. Medium-bodied and elegant, with compelling restraint, it has a seductively plush texture, finishing with bags of poise, perfume and persistence.

About brand

Château Gazin is Bordeaux wine producer, located on the right bank of the river Gironde in Pomerol. The wines are focused on Merlot which is sourced from the estate vineyard. The Grand Vin of Château Gazin is produced with 85 to 95-percent Merlot, depending on the vintage. The other varieties are usually Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is aged for 18 months in 50 percent new French oak barrels and reaches its prime after 10 to 15 years in the cellar. The second wine, L'Hospitalet de Gazin is homage to a Santiago de Compostela pilgrim hospital that orginally exsisted on the site. It's inaugural vintage was in 1986. In the winery, fermentation of each wine occurs in small concrete vats. Grape varieties are vinified seperately and components are only blended together after the fermentation is complete. The 26-hectare (64-acre) vineyard is planted on one of the highest plateaus in the region. The vines, which are on average 35 years old, are planted on Gunizan gravel topsoils with the subsoil interspersed with iron oxide. While more than 85 percent of the vineyards are planted to Merlot there are a few rows of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grown throughout the vineyard. Château Gazin was acquired by Louis Soualle, a French wine merchant, in the early 20th Century. Soualle's daughter married Edouard de Bailliencourt, who came from a family descended from the Lords of Landas. Today the château is still run by the same Bailliencourt family.
