Château Guiraud, an 1855 1er Grand Cru Classé, stands as one of the most progressive and nature-respecting estates in the Sauternes region. With a history dating back to 1766, the estate is defined not only by its aristocratic heritage but also by its revolutionary environmental approach: in 2011, Guiraud became the first among the classified Bordeaux estates to receive organic farming certification. Today, the estate represents a modern expression of Sauternes, where the luxury of botrytis, incredible freshness, and scientifically-backed biodiversity converge.
The heart of the estate is a 128-hectare vineyard situated on slopes dominated by the sandy gravel and clay typical of Sauternes. This geological structure ensures excellent drainage, while the deep clay layers retain necessary moisture during dry periods. The estate's hallmark is its uncompromising biodiversity: "insect hotels," strategically planted hedgerows, and a nurtured natural ecosystem allow Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) to develop organically. This creates wines characterized not just by sweetness, but by a strong mineral backbone and a profound sense of place.
The winemaking at Château Guiraud is focused on the harmony between Semillon (65%) and Sauvignon Blanc (35%). The proportion of Sauvignon Blanc is unusually high for the region, imparting the wines with exceptional tension and aromatic clarity. Harvesting is strictly selective and performed entirely by hand, with several successive passes (tries) through the vineyard to ensure only perfectly botrytized berries are collected.
