Description

Markowitsch Prellenkirchen Blaufränkisch 2021 is a refined, velvety dry red wine from the Carnuntum region, made from carefully selected 'Blaufränkisch' grapes grown in three exceptional wine regions: Ried Blauenstein, Ried Holzweingarten and Oberer Spitzer. These areas are dominated by limestone-rich soils, which give the wine minerality, structure and longevity.

This wine is characterized by intense aromas of blackcurrant, black cherry and blackberry, complemented by nuances of spice and smoke. The taste is dominated by juicy fruit concentration, balanced by soft but firm tannins and a long-lasting aftertaste, in which herbal and earthy accents are felt.

Spontaneous fermentation took place for 14–21 days with the skins, maintaining a temperature of 30–32°C, malolactic fermentation was performed, the wine was aged for 16 months in 500 liter French oak barrels.

Residual sugar content: 1.3g/, Acidity: 5.4g/l.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16–18 °C with red meat stews, steaks, grilled sausages, pasta with meat sauce, and mature cheeses.

James Suckling

At the start this blaufrankisch is smoky and slightly flinty, but after a little aeration in the glass it develops licorice, candied orange and meaty aromas. Quite some weight for this grape and appellation, pushing it to the top end of the medium-bodied range. Long, gently chewy finish in the best sense of the word. Drink or hold.

Markowitsch wines are characterized by expressiveness, excellent balance, and elegance. They harmoniously blend fruitiness, minerality, and subtle oak notes, perfectly reflecting the character of the Carnuntum region.

  • White wines, among which ‘Grüner Veltliner’ and ‘Weissburgunder’ (Pinot Blanc) dominate, are fresh, mineral-driven, with vibrant aromas of fruit and herbs.
  • Red wines, especially ‘Pinot Noir’ and ‘Zweigelt’, are elegant, with smooth tannins, juicy aromas of red and dark berries, and subtle spices.

Prestigious Vineyards

Weingut Markowitsch manages vineyards in the best locations of the Carnuntum region, where the soils and microclimate are ideal for growing high-quality grapes:

  • Vineyards situated on slopes with clay, gravel, and limestone soils impart minerality and complexity to the wines.
  • A favorable climate with warm days and cool nights ensures optimal grape ripening and aroma development.

Meticulous work in the vineyard and cellar allows Markowitsch to create wines of exceptional character.

Aging and Drinking Period

Markowitsch wines are crafted for enjoyment both in their youth and after aging in the bottle. Their excellent balance and structure allow the wines to develop successfully over time, gaining even more complexity and subtlety. This is especially true for their top-tier ‘Pinot Noir’ wines, which can age beautifully for many years.
