Description

Coudray-Bizot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru La Croix Rameau 2019 – a classic-style Vosne interpretation from the “La Croix Rameau” parcel, nestled within the legendary Romanée-Saint-Vivant vineyard. Crafted from 100% ‘Pinot Noir’, it perfectly embodies elegance, depth, and the timeless spirit of old-school Burgundy.

The bouquet reveals red fruitscherries and raspberries – layered with mossy, mineral notes and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied, with silky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, mineral-driven finish.

Winemaking reflects the domaine’s classic ethos: fermentation in open vats with native yeasts, followed by 20 months of aging in lightly toasted French oak barrels, around 30% new. The oak influence remains discreet, highlighting the terroir expression without overpowering the fruit.

Serving recommendations

Serve at 16-18°C with grilled quail with cranberry sauce, wild boar ragout, or roasted pheasant with herbs.

About brand

Coudray-Bizot is a historic Burgundy estate located in the prestigious Côte de Nuits. The winery is owned by Charles Van Canneyt, who took over from his grandfather Claude Coudray-Bizot, continuing a multi-generational tradition. The family estate stands out for its respect for the ancient winemaking traditions of Burgundy – natural fermentation, aging in oak barrels, and minimal intervention, all allowing the expressive terroir to shine.

The estate pays meticulous attention to vineyard care, applying both organic and biodynamic methods to preserve soil vitality and biodiversity. The Coudray-Bizot philosophy is rooted in the belief that great wine is born when nature and human work in harmony. The focus is on ‘Pinot Noir’ and ‘Chardonnay’ – the classic grapes of Burgundy – here achieving a remarkable balance of depth, structure, and elegance.

Wine Style

Coudray-Bizot wines embody classic Burgundian elegance, complexity, mineral precision, and impressive aging potential. These are wines made for both immediate enjoyment and long-term cellaring.

  • Red wine – primarily crafted from ‘Pinot Noir’. These wines are subtle yet profound, offering notes of red berries, herbs, spices, and earthy nuances. They have polished tannins, well-integrated acidity, and excellent longevity.

  • White wine – made from ‘Chardonnay’. These wines are elegant and mineral-driven, with hints of white peach, citrus, honey, and delicate oak. The texture is rich yet supported by a refreshing structure.

Prestigious Vineyards

Coudray-Bizot owns a small but exceptionally high-quality portfolio of vineyards in the Côte de Nuits. Each parcel is cultivated and vinified separately to maximize terroir expression.

Key vineyard sites:

  • Clos de la Roche Grand Cru – one of the estate’s greatest treasures. Produces deep, structured wines with substantial tannins and long aging potential.

  • Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru – warmer in character, offering silky texture and refined elegance.

  • Echézeaux Grand Cru – complex and sophisticated, balancing intensity with finesse.

These Grand Cru vineyards are complemented by smaller parcels within the Côte de Nuits that produce outstanding ‘Pinot Noir’ and ‘Chardonnay’ with distinctive character.

Aging and Drinking Window

Coudray-Bizot follows a traditional approach to maturation – wines are aged in oak barrels for 18–24 months, often using natural yeasts and avoiding filtration. The proportion of new oak is kept moderate to preserve the pure varietal expression.

These are long-lived wines – while some are approachable upon release, the finest examples, particularly those at Grand Cru level, age beautifully for 10–20 years or more, developing greater complexity, refinement, and depth over time.
