Red dry
The benchmark of the Pomerol AOC, renowned for the exceptional depth and texture that ‘Merlot’ achieves here, shaped by the unique blue smectite clay terroir and the precision and mastery of the Pétrus winemaking team.
The nose shows layers of black plum, evolving cherry, dried blackberry, and blackcurrant. With time, notes of cigar box, chocolate, tobacco, cypress resin, graphite, and delicate floral tones emerge. After decanting, hints of truffle and damp earth appear — a classic signature of Pétrus entering its mature phase.
On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied yet extraordinarily refined. Silky, fully mature tannins integrate with firm, still lively acidity that lends impressive depth. The texture is velvety and layered; the finish dominated by plum, cedar, cocoa, and a persistent line of graphite-like minerality.
The wine reflects the iconic terroir of Pomerol: the deep layer of blue smectite clay, which allows ‘Merlot’ to ripen slowly and achieve remarkable concentration and textural softness. Above it lies a sand-gravel surface layer, contributing minerality, aromatic purity, and structural tension. This unique soil composition is the defining hallmark of Pétrus.
The harvest is carried out entirely by hand, with rigorous sorting. Fermentation takes place in concrete tanks using natural yeasts. The wine is then aged for approximately 18–20 months in French oak barrels, the majority of which are new.
Serve at 17–18 °C. Pairs well with truffle dishes, lamb, mushrooms, beef tenderloin, and beef tenderloin. Decant for 1–2 hours.
Pétrus (often referred to as “Château Pétrus”) is the iconic estate of the Pomerol appellation on the right bank of Bordeaux, whose reputation has been built not through official classifications – Pomerol has none – but through consistently exceptional quality and extremely limited production. It is a small, contiguous vineyard of around 11.4 hectares on the Pomerol plateau, regarded as one of the clearest benchmarks of the appellation.
At the heart of Pétrus’ uniqueness lies its exceptional terroir: a very high proportion of iron-rich blue clay, found only in a small part of the Pomerol plateau and, in the case of Pétrus, covering almost the entire vineyard. This clay retains moisture effectively and helps the vines maintain balance even in drier years. It is one of the key reasons why the wine displays such remarkable textural depth and ageing potential.
The style of the estate is also defined by a clear varietal focus: today Pétrus is produced exclusively from ‘Merlot’ (since the late 2010s) and does not make a second wine, meaning that all attention is concentrated on a single, rigorously selected grand vin expression. The estate is owned by the Jean-François Moueix family; its legend was shaped after the Second World War by Edmonde Loubat and Jean-Pierre Moueix, and today the work continues under the Moueix family and their team.
The status of Pétrus today is that of a “quiet legend”: an extremely small estate, a clearly defined terroir signature, strict selection, and discreet distribution have created a wine that, in the world of collectors and professionals, has become synonymous with Pomerol and one of the most sought-after wines of all.
