Red dry
Hedges Family Estate Red Mountain AVA 2021 is a Bordeaux-style blend distinguished by its depth, complexity, and the powerful structure characteristic of the Red Mountain region. This wine reflects both the estate’s biodynamic philosophy and its commitment to expressive, terroir-driven winemaking.
The nose reveals intense aromas of blueberries, pomegranate, wild sage, smoked meat, coffee, white pepper, orange zest, and rosemary. The bouquet is rich and layered, showing clear spice notes and a sense of maturity.
On the palate, the wine is concentrated and structured, yet well balanced. Dark berry fruit is complemented by spicy, lightly smoky nuances, while the tannins are firm but finely polished. The finish is long and deep, marked by elegance and a subtle mineral tension.
The wine is crafted from fruit sourced from the Hedges, Bel’ Villa, Les Gosses, and Jolet vineyards — some of the estate’s most important parcels, whose terroir contributes intensity, depth, and character.
Fermentation took place in stainless steel tanks, with twice-daily pump-overs to achieve optimal extraction of tannins and aromatic compounds. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged in oak barrels, of which:
49% were new,
58% American oak,
39% French oak,
3% Hungarian oak.
This is a powerful yet elegant expression of Red Mountain, well suited for ageing. While enjoyable now, it has the potential to develop beautifully over 10–15 years.
Serve at 16-18 °C with grilled lamb ribs, beef stew, or mature cheeses.
Call this deep and complex wine a Bordeaux-and-beyond blend. 39% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 19% cabernet franc, 5% malbec, 3% syrah, 3% petit verdot, 0.5% souzao and 0.5% touriga. Ample, tasty black cherries, bittersweet dark chocolate and cranberry-like tannins. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
Located in the prestigious Red Mountain AVA of Washington State, Hedges Family Estate is renowned not only for its wine quality but also for its deeply rooted commitment to biodynamic farming and respect for the land. The estate was founded in 1987 by Tom and Anne-Marie Hedges, who brought together American and European wine traditions. Over time, the family estate expanded, and today it is led by the second generation – Sarah Hedges and Christophe Hedges – who have added a modern touch to their parents’ legacy without losing sight of their core mission: to craft wines that authentically reflect the Red Mountain terroir.
The Hedges family firmly believes that great wine is born when nature is left undisturbed and vineyards are nurtured through sustainable methods. The winery has eliminated synthetic chemicals, achieved biodynamic certification, and champions traditional winemaking practices. Their philosophy is grounded in the belief that true quality lies in harmony between soil, vine, and human touch.
Wine Style
Hedges wines are structured and concentrated, yet maintain natural elegance and balance – a reflection of Red Mountain’s intensity paired with the finesse of biodynamic winemaking.
Prestigious Vineyards
Hedges Family Estate owns 100% of its vineyards within the Red Mountain AVA – one of the warmest and driest microregions in Washington, ideally suited for growing red grape varieties.
Key vineyard sites include:
These vineyards are defined by mineral-rich loess soils, abundant sunshine, and persistent winds – conditions that help grapes achieve full ripeness while retaining natural acidity.
Aging and Drinking Window
Hedges wines are crafted to be enjoyable both in their youth and with age. Most red wines are aged in a mix of French and American oak barrels (approximately 30% new oak), while the whites are vinified in stainless steel and partially used oak barrels.
Although approachable upon release, especially the ‘Cabernet Sauvignon’-based wines, they also show excellent aging potential – with top examples maintaining quality for 10–15 years or more.
