Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 2019

Description

The pride of the estate and one of the most highly regarded wines in the entire Montalcino region. This iconic "Riserva" is produced only in exceptional, the very best vintage years. The 2019 vintage in Tuscany is considered a true classic, a five-star masterpiece.

In the glass, the 2019 "Vigna Paganelli" reveals itself as an exceptionally deep and complex wine. The aromatic bouquet immediately greets you with intense notes of dark cherries and ripe plums, which are soon enveloped by noble balsamic and forest floor accents.

On the palate, the wine demonstrates the classic power of 2019: it is weighty, powerful, yet retains an aristocratic elegance. The tannins are abundant and firm, but masterfully polished. The pulsating acidity leads to a savory and mineral finish.

This wine is born exclusively from the estate's oldest vineyard, "Vigna Paganelli," planted back in 1964. It is precisely from these historic vines that clones are selected for replanting all the other vineyards of the estate. The vineyard is situated on a unique alluvial terrace, where the intertwining moisture-retaining clay, shale, and limestone provide the wine with an exceptional balance of minerals and structure.

Maintaining fidelity to classic Montalcino traditions, the "Riserva" demands extraordinary patience. After a meticulous fermentation, this wine is aged in large French oak barrels for a full 48 months (4 years).

Serving recommendations

This powerful and complex wine is best served at a temperature of 16–18 °C and pairs perfectly with a well-done steak, slow-cooked game, and aged Pecorino cheese.

Vaisiškų ir pikantiškų aromatų derinys. Šis raudonasis vynas išsiskiria savita grafito nata, kurią lydi vyšnių, braškių, kadagių, pomidorų lapų, žemės bei švelnūs geležies (kraujo) akcentai. Poskonyje juntamas išraiškingi, bet švelnūs taninai, labiau kreidiniai nei aštrūs. Vynas pasižymi puikiu balansu.

The Il Poggione 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli (with 40,000 bottles produced) sees a prolonged 48 months in oak botti with an additional 12 months in bottle. Fruit comes exclusively from a 12-hectare vineyard that was originally planted in 1964. We haven't seen this Riserva since the 2016 vintage. It starts off with broad richness, and the bouquet fires on all cylinders. It shows tart blackberry and plum with cured tobacco leaf and sweet baking spice. You feel a rich buildup on the palate from what is a naturally concentrated vintage. I have adjusted the drinking window to be a bit shorter compared to past vintages.

This has a concentrated nose of blackberries, licorice and notes of espresso. The palate is medium- to full-bodied with supple tannins and red-fruit flavors complemented by cedar. Elegant Brunello. Drink or hold. Thursday, Dec 12, 2024

About brand

Il Poggione is one of the most prestigious wineries in Montalcino (Italy), managed by the Franceschi family for five generations. Located on the southern slopes of Sant'Angelo in Colle, this estate is renowned for its traditional style, highly age-worthy Brunello di Montalcino wines. It is an ideal choice for those seeking an authentic red wine that perfectly reflects the pure character of Sangiovese grapes and the regional terroir, offering an exceptional price-to-quality ratio.

Unique Montalcino Terroir and Historic Vineyards

The vineyards of the Il Poggione estate are located in the southern part of Montalcino, which boasts a unique microclimate. Mediterranean winds and significant day-to-night temperature variations ensure even ripening of the harvest and preserve the natural acidity of the berries. These factors give the wines extraordinary freshness and longevity. The pride of the winery is the Vigna Paganelli vineyard. Planted back in 1964, it is one of the oldest in the entire Montalcino region.

Traditional Winemaking

A father-and-son winemaking duo, Fabrizio and Alessandro Bindocci, works in the estate's cellars, acting as strict custodians of the traditional Brunello production canons. The grapes are harvested exclusively by hand. To maximize color and tannin extraction, a long maceration process is applied with regular pump-overs. Large, neutral French oak barrels are deliberately chosen for aging. This method maintains a very subtle wood influence and allows the Sangiovese grapes and the Sant'Angelo terroir to speak for themselves. In exceptional vintage years, the Riserva wine produced spends at least one additional year in barrels.

Wine Style and Aging Potential

The result in the glass is an intense and full-bodied wine. The multi-layered aromas and taste intertwine notes of dark berries, menthol, sweet smoke, cocoa, and spices, accompanied by the recognizable earthiness characteristic of Montalcino wines. These are beautifully aging wines, valued by collectors for their longevity and highly attractive price ratio in the premium class market.
