The Castello di Ama 2017 Haiku (a blend of Sangiovese with Cabernet Franc and Merlot in supporting roles) shows a rich and powerful center of gravity, all framed by lovely freshness and lots of rich fruit fiber. It sticks firmly to the palate with big fruit intensity, plum, blackberry, spice and cured tobacco. Haiku is a very unique wine within the context of Tuscany, and I'm not just referring to the unusual blend of grapes used here. This vintage offers darkness and a level of power that we don't usually associate with Tuscany. Yet, good context is given because the Sangiovese grape adds an authentic Tuscan touch and gives the wine a sense of place. A mere 6,000 bottles were made.
"Blackberry and walnut aromas with hints of dried chocolate powder. Blackcurrants, too. Medium-to full-bodied with fine, creamy tannins and a long, pretty finish. So delicious and beautiful now. Sangiovese with some merlot and cabernet franc. Drink and enjoy."
„Ama was alive long before it became our home“ - the beauty of Ama spurred Tomaso Carini to oversee the rebirth of this land in the early Seventies, involving three friends (GianVittorio Cavanna, Pietro Tradico and Lionello Sebasti) in the project. A limited company was established, which would change the destiny of Chianti. The four entrepreneurs, led by Cavanna, replanted most of the vineyards and built a modern fermentation cellar, which became an innovative model for the entire area. About 75 hectares of vineyards, located around the village of Ama, grow at an altitude of 420 – 527 meters above sea level and extend through four valleys called Chianti classico: Bellavista, San Lorenzo, La Casuccia and Montebuoni. The second generation of the Carini, Tradico and Sebasti families are still represented in today’s company. Art, landscape and the wisdom of wine co-exists in Ama and today.
